How is a wheel stud measured?
Measure from the inside of one stud to the outside the opposing stud (4 lug and 6 lug use opposing studs; ***if you use this method on a 5 lug use, 2 studs next to each other***). When measuring a 4 lug or 6 lug, the P.C.D. (pitch circle diameter) or bolt pattern diameter will be the distance measured.
What is Knurl diameter?
The knurling wheels are made of hardened tool steel and normally have a diameter of 15 – 20 mm. The teeth are similar to small cutting edges of tools.
How far should wheel studs stick out?
Agree and if the lug nuts are open, you should have the stud completely through to consider it threaded and engaged. If it’s a closed lug nut, the thread engagement should be 1-1/2 times the width of the stud, i.e. if you have a half inch diameter stud, the thread engagement length should be 3/4 of an inch.
What is stud size?
Stud size is the size of the bolt or stud that the ring or spade terminal will be placed around. If you measure the stud or bolt to find out what size you need and you are between two similar stud sizes, I recommend going with the larger size.
Are all 5 bolt patterns the same?
The hub lug bolt pattern will be determined by the number of lug bolts and the distance between the opposing hub bolt (see 4- lug hub diagram). All but 5 – lug patterns are measured in this manner. If your trailer wheel hubs have 5 lug bolts, measuring is slightly different.
How do you measure a Knurl?
There are two pitch systems for specifying tooth spacing on a knurl. Circular pitch is based on the distance between the teeth per inch (TPI). It is measured along the wheel from one tooth point to the next. Diametral pitch is based on the number of teeth per inch of the wheel’s diameter.
How is knurling pitch calculated?
Knurl Pitch is simply the number of knurls (teeth) per unit length of measure. Some knurl (rolls) are labeled with the pitch or you may have to make the calculation yourself. My knurls were not labeled so I had to count the number of teeth on the roll and divide that number by the circumference of the roll.

How many threads do you need to hold a wheel?
I seem to remember lug nuts should grab minimum their width in thread. So, a 1/2 lug should grab 1/2″ of thread. That should be about 6-7 turns.
How long is a wheel stud?
Stud is 14mm dia. so nut should be minimum 21 mm and have threads engaged the full distance. You’re wheel nuts are longer than that by a bit most likely. A 14 mm bolts thread pitch measures 1.5mm (metric fine) so 7 or 8 threads would only be 12mm threaded, doesn’t sound like enough.
Can you drill out a wheel stud?
You will need to drill the wheel stud out in this process. Wheel studs are obviously made of very tough hardened steel, so you WILL need an appropriate drill bit, and even the one I used burned up and dulled after less than an hour of use. When you pick a bit, I do not recommend carbide bits.
