In the 80s, I bought a 1987 Chevy Sprint 3 cyl. That care served me well as a young single Soldier. Five years later, I upgraded to Saturn after marriage and the birth of my 1st child. Thirty years later, and no more children in the house, I downsized my personal car to a 2017 Chevy Spark. My family named it the Spitball. I average 35 mpg city and 44 highway (47 with A/C off). Like the Sprint, I love the 5-speed manual transmission. The mileage in only slightly less than my Sprint of 30 years ago. Im 6ft, 1in still, and now 185 (30 lb heavier from the 80s) and I fit comfortably in it for short road trips and getting 95% of my errands done around town. Unlike the Sprint, I now have intermittent wipers, a rear window defogger and wiper, a sound system, 10 airbags, ABS, Stabilitrack, traction control, digital readouts, fuel injection, a 4th cylinder, exactly twice the horsepower, 2 more doors, automatic front headlights, 15 in tires (vs 12 in), and more. I got all of this for 10,083 out-the-door after dealer incentives and a military discount. Plus, other customers let is sit on the lot for several months - no one under 45 knows how to drive a manual transmission any longer, it seems. Also, I have to roll the windows by hand. The car is small so there is no issue there. What a bargain for me!

Ive had my Spark over three years now and I thought I would give a review. Overall, there are more pros than cons. And even the cons are not a big deal. So, overall, its a great value for the money and I like this car very much. Lets bullet list! Pros: Great gas mileage Easy maintenance Reliability Well build/quality Cons: No HP Comfort Little slippery on Ice and snow Frills The Spark gets great gas mileage, but if you want to get really really good gas mileage Ive found is to change the air filter every time you change the oil. The maintenance was easy because I got this lube 4 life thing when I bought the car, so all oil changes are free as long as the car is in my name. Its had a couple of recalls but nothing major. Mind you, Ive never had a problem with this car since I bought it. Nada. Nothing. Not even a headlight out. The cons are small. The engine will not wow you, but I commute so I barely ever get above 50 mph anyways so who cares. The seats are ok, but on long trips it can get a little uncomfortable. It has no frills, but if you sign up to Onstar you can stream music, or from your phone. No CD player. And, if you get the Onstar the car is a Wifi hotspot and can accommodate up to 7 devices. I dont, i just listen to the radio. Ive driven it in the snow/ice a few times and it does have a tendency to fishtail, but to be fair i didnt have stud or snow tires, and I made it there and back anyways, but just an observation. Its a lot of car for the money and I would buy another one.
  • Excellent car and often overlooked in the market

Note: I bought this car in May for my college age daughter. I purchased this with that in mind as I wanted an easy car to park with good sightlines and approachable tech for a new driver. Sightlines/Interior/Ergonomics: First off, a hatchback is n ideal first car for a new driver. The Spark excels in providing excellent sightlines out of all windows with the usual C pillar blindspots reduced. The nearly flat rear window is easy to see. The interior is a mix of sturdy cloth seats (LS model) with a properly places armrest on the drivers seat. Controls for the HVAC are simple and well placed. The standard touchscreen is bright and crisp with Apple Carplay / Android Auto/ Bluetooth ans a backup camera standard. There is also OnStar available. What I like is that the system is easy to use and easily fades into the background so that a newer driver can actually focus on driving. There are (2) cup holders forward of the shifter. (1) cup holder in the center of the rear seat. The front seats are surprisingly comfortable. The rear seats are serviceable but remember this is a small car. All controls are easy to use and placed ideally. Engine/Performance/Economy: The 1.4L engine is sufficient and very quiet. We purchased this car with about 200miles on the odometer and proceeded to place almost another 1000 miles on it in a month. Prior average economy was 39mpg. I have regularly exceeded the mileage estimates usually hovering in the mid 40mpg range.(mostly highway w/AC on) . This model is paired with the CVT transmission. Unlike earlier CVTs, this model has "shift" points programed into the transmission so a heavy foot doesn't produce a consistent loud engine drone as the vehicle is accelerating. The allows for the driver to feel like this is a traditional automatic and the experience is altogether enjoyable. The engine is exceptionally quiet and the car really scoots in traffic. It isn't a sports car but it is more than enough for most conditions. The vehicle is damped well and rides much better than its short wheelbase would normally allow. It is generally quiet on the road with some undulating surfaced that will occasional disrupt the car ( a consequence of a smallish wheelbase) Storage: The rear hatch houses a small storage area. There is a cover on the back to hide prying eyes (but it isn't attached to the hatch so it remains in place. A weird cost saving measure) . There is a well sized storage nook in front of the cup holders that perfectly fits an IPhone.. There are small storage nooks in the doors. But storage is at a premium . A Honda Fit is a better "fit: is storage is primary concern. As a city car, the Spark has worked well for college needs. Value: It is no surprise that in the States, small crossovers are king in the marketplace. A side effect is that small hatchbacks are languishing on the lots of many dealerships. As a consumer, there are many good options for a new car for a first time buyer. The Spark competes with the Mirage and Versa in this arena. I do feel that the Spark "feels" more substantial than a competing Mirage (although these can also be had well optioned for a good price). The Versa only comes in a sedan now ( The Versa Note was discontinued)and is a older platform (Nissan will be providing a new one next year). If you are not hard pressed in getting a CUV, there are great deals to be had. Mine went out the door new for a little over 10K .
